There’s a little more timing involved with a mother’s dress than you might expect. We recommend starting about 6–9 months before the wedding, especially if you’d like the option to special order. A special-order dress can take around 4–5 months to arrive, so starting early leaves time for alterations without cutting it too close.
You don’t need every wedding detail figured out before you shop. It does help to know the colors, dress code, and how formal the wedding will be. If the bride has already chosen her gown, that can give you a little more direction, too.
